Where Swimming Actually Happens
Holland State Park sits at the lake's west end with separate Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan units on the north side of the channel, and swimming is among the park's listed activities. The park runs the standard beach flag warning system: red flags mean the water is unsafe and no one should enter. One stretch of water is legally off limits. Michigan's local watercraft controls include rule R281.770.21, in force since October 1978: on the entrance channel from Lake Michigan to Lake Macatawa, "it is unlawful for a person to swim." The channel is narrow, deep, and busy with boat traffic moving between the lakes, and the pier currents on the Lake Michigan side have their own dangers. How to Check the Water Before You Go
Two public systems track bacteria at Michigan beaches. Locally, the Ottawa County health department tests public beach water weekly from Memorial Day through Labor Day for E. coli and posts results to an online dashboard. Statewide, results and any advisories or closings flow into BeachGuard, the interactive map run by EGLE, Michigan's environmental agency, with data entered by local health departments. Know what monitoring does not do. The county's page states plainly that it does not issue safety notices based on weather or wave conditions, and E. coli sampling says nothing about algae. Why the Water Looks the Way It Does
Lake Macatawa is a 1,780-acre drowned river mouth lake at the bottom of a 179-square-mile watershed spanning parts of Ottawa and Allegan counties. About 46 percent of that watershed is agricultural and another third is urban, and it has lost 86 percent of its natural wetlands, the sponges that once filtered runoff. Rain that lands on a field near Zeeland ends up in this lake, carrying soil and fertilizer with it. Phosphorus is the nutrient that controls algae growth in Michigan lakes, and this watershed delivers a lot of it: roughly 91 percent of the measured load comes from nonpoint sources, mostly agriculture, rather than from pipes.
The result has a long paper trail. A 1971 federal survey included the lake in "Problem Lakes in the United States." The most recent full monitoring year is 2024, published in January 2025 by Grand Valley State University's Annis Water Resources Institute, which has sampled the lake three times a year since 2013. Three indicators tell the story:
- Phosphorus: a 2024 average of 107 micrograms per liter against the state's interim target of 50. The annual average has roughly stabilized since 2022, with summer readings easing while fall readings rise.

The 2024 Project Clarity annual report sums the year up as a plateau: conditions somewhat better than before restoration began, still indicative of an impaired lake. Algae and Toxins, Specifically
Chlorophyll measures how much algae is in the water, not whether that algae is producing toxins; the monitoring program makes that distinction explicitly and tests separately for microcystin, a toxin blue-green algae can produce, as it has since 2017. The 2024 pattern: below detection in spring, a lakewide average of 0.94 micrograms per liter in summer, and 3.44 in fall. The report calls the rising seasonal trend a potential concern while noting it remained below the EPA's recreational threshold of 8 micrograms per liter. The Cleanup: a TMDL and Project Clarity
The legal framework is a Total Maximum Daily Load, a pollution budget the state prepared in January 1999. It set the goal of cutting the lake's annual phosphorus load from 138,500 pounds to 55,000, a 60 percent reduction, and dropping the in-lake concentration from 0.125 to 0.050 milligrams per liter. Because 91 percent of the load comes from the landscape rather than from permitted pipes, the burden falls on the watershed: farms, drains, and development patterns across two counties.
The muscle behind that budget is Project Clarity, a multimillion-dollar public-private restoration partnership that has restored wetlands, fixed streams, funded farm best practices, and run community education across the watershed, with the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council, the Outdoor Discovery Center Network, and GVSU's research institute all involved. The honest scorecard after a decade: phosphorus improved into the high-80s range between 2018 and 2021, slipped back above 100, and the 2024 report concludes that watershed gains have not yet become lasting in-lake gains, with more work needed. Match the lake to your uses. Boating, sailing, and paddling are what this lake does best, and the water quality story barely touches them.
